Dog goes to College owner-trainer public access test
Dog goes to College 2012-2013
This test covers skills a dog needs to function appropriately and professionally in public at all times, to the best of my knowledge and from my experiences. Other public access tests you may want to take and that inspired my creation of this are:
Assistance Dogs International test
Psychiatric Service Dog Society test
Foundation for Service Dog Support test
A copy of the completed test should be kept with training logs and other records by the handler.
This test is to show proficient skill at public access. Amelia Schwiebert, Dog goes to College, and the administrator of the test do not certify a dog as a service animal upon completion of the test, and do not take responsibility for the actions of any dog during or after the test. The only way for a dog to be a service dog in the US is to meet the standards set forth in the ADA and other laws, and completion of this test does not imply or confirm service dog status. This test does not cover tasks, only public access skills.
Automatic failure:
Any dog who shows aggression, excessive fear, barks or eliminates inappropriately in public will automatically be dismissed from the test and should not be considered a service animal unless further training is able to change such an issue. A handler who uses harsh or abusive methods of controlling their animal will be automatically dismissed.
Aggression is considered any display of hostility to human, animal, or perceived threat (such as a noise or inanimate object). Aggression includes growling, lunging raising of hackles, some kinds of barking, snapping, biting, attempting to bite, showing teeth, and more can be signs of aggression and constitute failure of this test.
Excessive fear is considered any display of fearfulness large enough to impact the dog’s work as a professional in public with the handler. This can include fear based aggression, shutting down and refusing to move, trembling, going to extreme lengths to shy away from a person, animal, or perceived threat (such as a noise or inanimate object) and running away from the handler.
Harsh or abusive handling methods include hitting, kicking or intentionally harming the dog, prong collars, shock collars and inappropriate use of choke collars (martingales, if used correctly, may be alright). It also includes screaming at the dog, punishment only training methods, fear based training methods, dominance based training methods, rolling a dog over on it’s back in public, and reverse clicker training (a click indicating a punishment).
